.45-70 Government ammo buying guide

.45-70 is three pressure tiers in one headstamp. Buy the load your action can handle, then choose the weight for the job.

.45-70 Government has been in continuous production since 1873, which means it has had time to accumulate a load catalogue that spans three pressure regimes and a century and a half of firearms. That is the one fact that governs every purchase: not which bullet is best, but which pressure tier your action was built for. Get that wrong and the rest of the discussion is academic.

Three pressure tiers, one cartridge

Factory .45-70 ammunition is loaded to three broad tiers, and the boxes are not always labelled as clearly as they should be:

  1. Trapdoor / cowboy loads – around 19,000 psi, 405-grain bullets at roughly 1,300 fps. Original Springfield 1873 actions, and any lever gun you want to run with mild recoil.
  2. Standard SAAMI loads – up to 28,000 psi, the level modern Marlins, Winchesters, and most current production levers are proofed for. A 300-grain load near 1,880 fps and a 405-grain near 1,350 fps both live here.
  3. Ruger-grade and handloaded – well above SAAMI, built for the Ruger No. 1 and No. 4 receivers, which are strong enough to take pressures the levers are not. These are the 400-grain hard-cast loads that make bear-country claims.

A modern Marlin 1895 or Henry is a tier-two rifle. A Ruger No. 1 is a tier-three rifle. A Trapdoor is a tier-one rifle, permanently. There is no safe way to upgrade a receiver by choosing a different box, and the pressure difference between tiers is the difference between a gun that lasts a lifetime and one that does not.

The load menu

Typical factory numbers. Tier matters more than brand.
BulletVelocityTierBest at
405 gr lead flat nose~1,300–1,350 fpsAnyBuffalo-era replica loads, mild practice
300 gr JHP / soft point~1,800–1,880 fpsStandardDeer, black bear, general hunting
400 gr hard cast~1,700–1,900 fpsRuger-gradeBrown bear country, deep penetration

The 300-grain soft point is the versatile hunting load: enough velocity to flatten the trajectory inside 150 yards, enough bullet to put a wound channel through medium game, and it is the weight most manufacturers load to a consistent standard. Hornady’s LEVERevolution 325-grain FTX is the modern middle ground – a polymer tip that is safe in tubular magazines and adds usable ballistic coefficient for the lever-action crowd. The 405-grain flat nose is the classic weight, still loaded as cowboy and black-powder-replica ammunition, and still the right choice for a mild day at the range.

The 400-grain hard-cast loads are the bear-country answer. They are slower than the marketing implies but they are designed to keep weight and drive deep rather than expand. If that is the job, buy the load purpose-built for it – Buffalo Bore and Garrett make well-documented examples – and understand it needs a rifle proofed for the pressure.

Barrel length changes the arithmetic more than most people expect. A 22-inch lever barrel and a 16-inch trapper barrel will not print the same velocity from the same box, and the heavier the bullet the more a short barrel costs you. If you hunt with a trapper-length rifle, buy a load tested from that length or accept that you are running below the number on the box. For the general relationship between grain weight and what a cartridge does, see understanding grain weight.

Practice economics

.45-70 is a volume-practice challenge: even the mild tier is not cheap, and the hot tier is a box-at-a-time proposition. The solution the lever-action crowd has used for a century is still the right one: buy the cheapest safe load in the weight closest to your hunting load, shoot it for mechanics and zero, and spend the expensive boxes on verification. Cowboy-action 405-grain loads are the economy tier; they will not match your 300-grain hunting point of impact at 150 yards, but they will keep your trigger finger honest at 50.

The live shelf and current economics are on the .45-70 Government caliber page, where $1.73 a round at the low end is the number to budget against. Compare that to a lighter hunting caliber with price per round, and if you are shopping the straight-wall alternatives, the .450 Bushmaster case is covered in .450 Bushmaster ammo for the regulated-season side of the argument.

A sensible first order

If the rifle is a hand-me-down with unknown history, start with a box of standard factory loads and a gunsmith before you buy anything in bulk. The .45-70 will outlast you; the receiver only will if the pressure tiers are respected.

  • One box of standard-pressure 300-grain soft points for zero and the season. This is the load most rifles and most hunters should standardise on.
  • One flat of mild 405-grain loads for practice, assuming your action handles standard pressure at minimum.
  • A box of hard-cast only if the rifle is a Ruger (or equivalent) and bear country is a real part of your calendar.

.45-70 rewards the shooter who respects its history by reading the pressure tier before the bullet weight. Match the load to the receiver, pick a hunting weight you can practise near, and the cartridge will do everything its reputation promises – within 150 yards, which is where it has always lived.
