.32 H&R Magnum ammo buying guide

.32 H&R Magnum is the soft-shooting middle of the small-revolver world: more capable than .32 S&W Long, milder than .38 Special, and the practice load for a .327 Federal Magnum cylinder.

.32 H&R Magnum sits between .32 S&W Long and .38 Special in both capability and recoil. It earns a place for two reasons: small revolvers where .38 +P is unpleasant, and multi-caliber cylinders — especially .327 Federal Magnum guns — that will fire it as an inexpensive practice round. The factory menu is modest. Knowing what the cartridge is actually for keeps you from over-buying the wrong loads.

What the cartridge is for

Designed in the early 1980s as a lengthened .32 S&W Long, .32 H&R Magnum runs SAAMI-spec pressures high enough to push an 85–100-grain bullet around 1,000–1,200 fps from a handgun-length barrel, depending on load and gun. That is more authority than older .32s and noticeably less blast and recoil than a similar-weight .38 Special +P from a snub frame.

The cartridge is not a hunting round and not a duty round for a service pistol. It is a small-revolver cartridge: deep concealment, mild practising, and a second gear for multi-cylinder revolvers that also shoot .327 Federal Magnum or older .32s. If you own a .327, this is the cheapest way to feed the cylinder. If you only own a dedicated .32 H&R gun, buy it for what it is — a compact defensive and practise cartridge, not a magnum in disguise.

The load menu

Representative factory loads. Velocities from short to medium barrels; always trust the box over a general figure.

Jacketed hollow point85–100 grDefensive use from snubsChoose loads tested from short barrels
Lead semi-wadcutter90–100 grPaper, steel, trainingClean, classic target profile

Federal, Hornady and Winchester keep the core of the commercial menu. Availability is thinner than .38 Special, which is the ordinary tax on a niche revolver cartridge. Live pricing for the .32 H&R Magnum shelf sits around $1.41 a round when stock is healthy; hollow points cost more than practice loads as always.

What to practise with

For volume work the requirements are simple: mild recoil so you actually shoot the snub, consistent ignition, and a price that does not punish a five-shot cylinder. Flat-nose FMJ and lead semi-wadcutter loads are the right tools. Buy by the box or case depending on how much you shoot; the live .32 H&R Magnum page shows case pricing when it exists.

If your gun is a .327 Federal Magnum, practise here and carry .327 magnum loads when you want them. The same chamber accepts .32 S&W Long and .32 S&W for even cheaper volume — useful for a range day, not a substitute for zeroing your defensive load. The general grain-weight reasoning is in understanding grain weight, and the capacity-versus-mass frame that still shapes most carry choices is in 9mm against .45 ACP.

What to carry from a snub

Pick a hollow point designed for short barrels, then do the part almost everyone skips:

  1. Feed 50–100 rounds of it through the gun from the cylinder you will actually carry. Snubs are the fussiest platforms for feeding; do not assume.
  2. Confirm point of impact at your real distance, not only at a rest at 7 yards.
  3. Rotate the top round rather than rechambering the same cartridge weekly. Repeated seating can push bullets back into the case and raise pressure.

Barrel length matters less here than in magnum revolvers — you are already working from a short tube — but a 2-inch snub still gives up velocity against a 4-inch gun. Buy the load the manufacturer tests from short barrels when the brand publishes it.

How it compares on recoil

Against .38 Special from a similar snub, .32 H&R Magnum is clearly softer. Against .327 Federal Magnum it is dramatically softer and ballistically much weaker. That is the trade: you are buying shootability and multi-cylinder economy, not magnum energy. If you need the heavier hit, step up to .38 +P or .327 and accept the recoil; if you need a gun you will practise with every week, this is the cartridge that stays pleasant.

That practising habit is the actual product. A snub you shoot monthly with mild ammunition will outperform a magnum you dread. Buy enough practice boxes that the cylinder is never empty when the range trip comes around, and treat the defensive hollow points as verification rather than volume.

For the longer magnum conversation in one chamber, see 9mm against .45 ACP for the general capacity-versus-mass frame, and the .327 guide for the revolver ladder specifically.

A sensible first order

  • Two boxes of practice FMJ or LSWC in 85–90 grains for the first range sessions and zero.
  • Two boxes of your chosen defensive hollow point — one to verify, one to keep loaded.
  • One extra practice box if you own a .327 and plan to use this as the cylinder-filling load.

Check the live .32 H&R Magnum shelf for current stock and per-round pricing before you commit; the menu is small enough that availability, not brand loyalty, often decides the order. A modest buffer of practice boxes is wiser than a single large order that may not restock before you need it.
